University expects significant energy savings and lower emissions from switch to natural gas
BOSTON and MACHIAS, Maine — Oct. 1, 2013 —Xpress Natural Gas (XNG) submitted the top-scoring proposal in response to University of Maine System’s (UMS) Request for Proposal for a Multi-Campus Thermal Energy Agreement. The proposed project will pertain to University of Maine at Machias (UMM). Following a final agreement between the two parties, work will commence in spring 2014 with the goal to have all buildings on campus piped and operating on natural gas before the start of the 2014-15 academic year.
The proposed project will help UMS, who has not had access to a traditional natural gas pipeline save more than 25% on their annual heating costs.
The switch to natural gas has important environmental benefits for the campus, and part of its overall sustainability commitment. A recent report by the University of Maine System shows that UMM has already reduced its greenhouse gas emissions from heating and electricity by 44 percent between 2006 and 2012 the largest reduction among the seven UMS campuses over the same period. With clean-burning natural gas supplied by XNG, the UMM campus will take another significant step thanks to a 30 percent reduction in carbon emissions from moving away from heating oil.
In addition, the local economy will benefit by XNG hiring local contractors to complete the design and fit-out work.“XNG is honored to have been ranked as the top-scoring proposal submitted to UMS,” said the president of XNG, John Nahill. “When formally accepted, XNG and the University of Maine at Machias have great partnership potential. It’s enormously exciting to even be considered.”
When executed, this project will further underscore XNG’s position as a market leader by expanding its institutional portfolio. It will also highlight the company’s rapid growth as well as its commitment to providing unmatched service to their customers in New England, New York, New Jersey and Eastern Canada.
